Why Liberalism Failed provides a bracing antidote to the pieties of left and right by showing how an impoverished, bipartisan conception of liberty has imprisoned the public life it claims to have set free. For all the benefits of liberalism (and there are many), it has within it the seeds of its own demise. Liberalism lacks the ability to reproduce virtue, because its foundation lacks substance.

It is important because of what it reveals about our forgetting of the ideas of the Founders.
By liberalism, Deneen means the modern enterprise–the push for self-actualization free of the constraints of tradition, family, and religion that typifies modern culture. Why Liberalism Failed is Catholic in celebrating a collective tradition, looking longingly back, though admitting that we can never go home again. And it is communitarian in distrusting individual choice, looking fearfully forward, and affirming that Plato’s Republic and its coercive utopianism in the style of Sparta should be our model for method. Deneen says that “Liberalism has failed—not because it fell short but because it was true to itself.” As liberalism progresses, it is the victim of the success of its internal contradictions. It creates its own conditions to fail. So, in Why Liberalism Failed, Deneen points out how liberalism’s triumph over the failed ideology of socialism proved to be its undoing. According to Deneen, socialism leads to lost freedoms, so it fails, but the extravagant individual freedoms and lack of corresponding responsibility caused by liberalism have also led to liberalism’s undoing. Patrick Deneen writes in Why Liberalism Failed that “Liberalism has failed–not because it fell short, but because it was true to itself. It failed because it has succeeded.” In becoming more of itself—and being implemented by those in power more in concert with its fundamental principles—it has revealed its inherent internal contradictions to a greater and greater extent.
